Egypt: More Than You Expected

Egypt is full of traditions that might feel unusual — or even surprising — to visitors. From how people greet each other to how they treat guests, these customs are part of what makes Egypt so warm, vibrant, and unique.

☀️ What to Expect From the Weather

Egypt is a sunny country almost all year round. Summers (June to September) can be extremely hot, especially in Upper Egypt (like Luxor and Aswan). Cairo, too, gets scorching during midday.

If you’re planning a visit, aim for the cooler months — between November and March. Just be aware that desert winds, known as “Khamsin,” can occasionally stir up dust in spring.

For thousands of years, Egyptians have lived in harmony with the desert sun. That resilience shows in their warm spirit and wise outlook on life.

🍽️ The Food

Egyptian food is simple, hearty, and packed with flavor. Whether it’s a plate of koshary, a warm bowl of molokhia, or a crispy bite of ta’ameya (Egyptian falafel), there’s something delicious waiting on every corner.

You might be surprised to find that each region in Egypt has its own way of cooking traditional meals — and every family swears by their recipe.

☕ Tea is Always Served

Whenever you visit someone — even for 5 minutes — you’ll likely be offered a glass of sweet black tea. Saying “no” might be considered rude, so just sip and enjoy the moment.

👋 Greetings Are a Big Deal

In Egypt, saying hello is a full social ritual. Expect a handshake, a smile, and sometimes a kiss on the cheek (even between men, if they’re close friends or family).
It’s not just “hi” — it’s a connection.
